YOU CHOOSE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


How does the You Choose event work?
You Choose is a "virtual" fund-raising event. This means that you can designate any activity, in any location, as an event that supports Team Survivor. You just need to let your friends, family and colleagues know that you are participating in a fund-raiser for Team Survivor, and to ask for their support (ask them to make donations to Team Survivor on your behalf). We will provide you with guidance and pre-formatted materials on raising funds for Team Survivor that will be appropriate to use with any activity that You Choose.


Are there limitations on what activity I choose, or where I do it?
None (as long as you sign the event waiver and don't break any laws)! We expect folks to come up with a wide range of activities that they designate as their event to raise money for Team Survivor. Some will organize a group hike or bike ride or a brunch, some will host a garage sale or poker night, some will invite friends to their regular yoga or spinning class, others will go for a solo ocean swim or a long horseback ride. We also anticipate that we will have participants in different states designating activities as Team Survivor fund-raisers. It's easy to tailor and expand this virtual event so more can join in the fun!


But what about events that are fund-raisers for other organizations?
OK, it would probably be awkward and confusing to use an event that has pledge or sponsorship collection for a different organization associated with it, so you might want to avoid those.


What do you mean by "solo or with a team"?
You may choose to do an activity on your own and designate it as your Team Survivor You Choose event. Or, you may choose to join a group of others who will be getting together for their activity. For a list of current You Choose events, email youchoose@teamsurvivor-la.org or call (310) 477-8557.

You may also choose to form and lead a group: It's kind of like organizing a little party: figure out something fun to do, invite your friends, and encourage everyone to raise funds and support Team Survivor!


What if someone is already having a similar event?
It is no problem if we have similar or "copycat" events going on. Part of the thinking - and the fun - behind You Choose is that people can support Team Survivor conveniently and in a way that is appealing to them. Two groups with a similar idea and compatible geography and timing may decide to combine their activities, or they may not. You can choose....


Can my event be on the same day as someone else's event?
Sure! We want to make You Choose as convenient and fun as possible, so please pick the date that works best for you and your Group.


How do I raise money for Team Survivor?
Ask! Ask you friends, your family, your colleagues at work. Most people are thrilled to have the opportunity to support a cause that is important to you. Many people will want to hear more about your activity; some may want to join you. We will provide you with suggestions for emails or letters you can send soliciting donations.

There are many ways for your sponsors to donate:

1. Online using a credit card: use this link to Network For Good , our partner web site that processes secure credit card donations. Make sure you remind them to use the "Designation" field on this website to donate in your honor so you're eligible for fund-raising prizes!

2. By mail with a check or money order: have your sponsor(s) mail their donation with your name in the memo line of the check to Team Survivor * You Choose * 1223 Wilshire Blvd. #570 * Santa Monica, CA 90403.

3. You can collect checks and cash from your sponsors and send them in (with one large check from you to cover the cash donations) to Team Survivor * You Choose * 1223 Wilshire Blvd. #570 * Santa Monica, CA 90403. Please note that Team Survivor is unable to provide a receipt to sponsors who donate cash that is submitted in the form of a check by a third party.

Sponsors who provide a name and mailing address will receive acknowledgement of their donation for tax purposes as allowable by law.


How do I sign up for You Choose?
There are three ways to sign up for You Choose:

1. Register online by visiting You Choose registration at Eventbee.

2. Register by email by sending an email to youchoose@teamsurvivor-la.org with the following information:

  • Name
  • Home phone
  • Mobile phone
  • Email address
  • Mailing address
  • Your activity and date
  • Will you be solo or with a group?
  • If you are joining a group, who is the leader (this might be you!)?

    3. Register by mail or fax with this registration form

    What happens after I sign up?
    This will vary depending on whether you are a Solo Participant, part of a Group, or a Group Leader.

    If you are a Solo Participant, we will send you the waiver of liability, fund-raising materials and a You Choose static sticker or temporary tattoo that you can wear during your training and your You Choose activity. We will also send you periodic updates via email on all of the You Choose events and fund-raising milestones.

    If you are part of a Group, your group leader will contact you (or you might already know him/her) to give you all of the details about your activity. You will receive a Waiver of Liability, fund-raising materials, and a You Choose static sticker and temporary tattoo to help promote the event and just for fun!

    If you are a Group Leader, in addition to the waiver of liability, fund-raising materials and static sticker or temporary tattoo we send every participant, we will send you a packet that will provide backup forms you can use with your Group members, a Group Tracking Form, FAQs, and an outline of Group Leader responsibilities.


    Where do I send the donations?
    Use the sponsor tracking sheet to keep track of your fund-raising efforts and send donations to: Team Survivor * You Choose * 1223 Wilshire Blvd. #570 * Santa Monica, CA * 90403.


    When do I have to send in my money?
    Donations received by December 18, 2009 will count towards prizes for top fund-raisers.


    How do I get credit for donations made online?
    Make sure that you ask your sponsors to put your name in the "Designation" field on the
    Network For Good website.
